Health Benefits Expiring at Year-End? How to Plan Your Care Before December 31

Have you ever logged into your health insurance portal in the fall and realized you still have benefits available?

I have been that patient.

In previous years, I would look up my maximum coverage for each “alternative healthcare provider” and finally make time for appointments I had been meaning to book.

Then, out came the calendar. I would map out chiropractic appointments, osteopathy, naturopathic consultations and any recommended lab testing. Much like arranging massage, vision or dental appointments, it was a chance to make use of support I had overlooked during a busy year.

If this sounds familiar, the fall can be a good time to review your coverage and reconnect with your health goals.

Start With Your Insurance Portal

Before booking, log into your insurance account or contact your insurer. Check both your annual maximum and your remaining balance for each service.

Your plan may list these services under “paramedical practitioners,” “extended health care” or “alternative healthcare providers.”

For each service you are considering, confirm:

  • How much coverage remains.
  • Whether the maximum is separate or shared with other providers.
  • The percentage reimbursed and any limit per appointment.
  • Whether your practitioner is eligible under your plan.
  • When the benefit resets.
  • Whether a referral or other documentation is required.

Many people plan around December 31, but your reset date depends on your policy. Also, the deadline for receiving care may differ from the deadline for submitting a claim.

Your insurer’s portal can help you review coverage and balances before making a plan.

Use Your Calendar to Make a Realistic Plan

Once you know what is available, consider which health concerns deserve attention.

Perhaps your back pain has returned, your sleep has been difficult or you have been meaning to follow up on a treatment plan. Alternatively, you may be ready for an initial assessment of a concern you have put off.

Start with the appointment that addresses your main priority. Then, arrange any recommended follow-ups around your work and family commitments.

You can spread appointments across the remaining weeks rather than trying to fit everything into late December. Your practitioner can help determine an appropriate schedule based on your needs.

Available benefits can make care more accessible. Your health goals should guide how you use them.

Direct Billing at Hudson Integrative Healthcare

HIH Clinic

Our clinic direct bills to most insurance companies, helping make eligible appointments easier to manage.

Naturopathic consultations, chiropractic appointments and osteopathic manual therapy appointments can be direct billed to participating insurers under eligible plans.

Registered psychotherapy appointments often require payment upfront, followed by submitting your receipt to your insurer for reimbursement. BIE wellness appointments are paid out of pocket.

However, direct billing depends on your insurer, policy and practitioner eligibility. You may still need to pay a deductible, an uncovered portion or the full fee if a claim cannot be processed.

Our friendly front desk team does their best to coordinate insurance submissions and payments. This can reduce paperwork and, when your plan allows payment directly to the clinic, reduce the amount you need to pay upfront.

Please bring your current insurance information and let us know about any changes to your coverage.

Make Time for Chiropractic and Osteopathic Care

Year-end planning can also be an opportunity to address physical discomfort or reconnect with care that has helped you previously.

Perhaps you have been putting up with back or neck pain, stiffness after long workdays, or difficulty moving comfortably. An assessment with our chiropractor or an osteopathic manual practitioner can help you explore your concerns and discuss suitable care.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Back or neck pain that keeps returning.
  • Muscle tension or stiffness.
  • Discomfort associated with desk work or repetitive activities.
  • Mobility concerns affecting everyday tasks.
  • Following up on a previous treatment plan.

If you are new to either service, start with an initial assessment. For returning patients, an appointment provides time to review changes and decide whether further care is appropriate.

Our reception team can help coordinate chiropractic, osteopathic and naturopathic appointments. Together with your practitioner, you can build a schedule that fits your needs and remaining coverage.

Why Book a Naturopathic Consultation This Fall?

An initial consultation or a return visit can help you take stock of concerns that have accumulated throughout the year.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Persistent fatigue or sleep difficulties.
  • Digestive symptoms or changes in bowel habits.
  • Menstrual, perimenopausal or menopausal concerns.
  • Reviewing bloodwork and metabolic health.
  • Following up on an existing treatment plan.
  • Discussing whether further testing would help guide care.

For returning patients, a follow-up also provides space to review what has improved, what remains difficult and how your needs have changed.

You do not need to wait until January to begin that conversation.

Could Your Benefits Help With Lab Testing?

Specialized testing is one reason patients consider a naturopathic appointment before year-end. Depending on the clinical concern, a discussion may include hormone testing, digestive investigations or other laboratory assessments.

These can be larger expenses, so it is helpful to understand the costs before proceeding.

Coverage for naturopathic consultations does not automatically mean coverage for laboratory testing. Some plans may reimburse eligible testing in full or in part. Others exclude it, use a separate benefit category or apply specific restrictions.

Before purchasing a test, ask your insurer about:

  • The exact test and laboratory.
  • Whether testing ordered by a naturopathic doctor is eligible.
  • Which benefit category applies.
  • Any reimbursement limits or required documentation.
  • Whether the consultation and test fees are assessed separately.

Our team can provide available fee and test information to help you make that inquiry. However, your insurer determines reimbursement.

Choose Testing That Can Inform Your Care

The first step is an assessment of your symptoms and health history. Your naturopathic doctor can explain what a proposed test measures, its limitations and how the results might change your care.

For example, a comprehensive hormone panel or digestive test kit is not necessary for every patient.

Before committing, ask: What are we investigating, and how will the result help?

We Add Appointment Availability During the Year-End Season

We know this is a busy time for patients.

Our team adds appointment hours during the year-end season to help accommodate new patients, returning patients and last-minute bookings, including close to year-end.

Contact reception with your availability and the service you need. They can help you explore appointment options and coordinate visits.

Booking earlier gives you more choice. It also leaves time for assessment, any appropriate testing and follow-up before the holiday season.

A Gift of Time for Yourself

For some patients, making space for care feels like an early Christmas present to themselves.

That gift might be an appointment they have postponed, a clearer understanding of their symptoms or a manageable plan for the months ahead.

Whether you are arranging chiropractic care, returning to osteopathy or booking a naturopathic consultation, setting aside time for your health can be a meaningful form of self-care.

If you have forgotten about your appointment schedule during a busy year, you are in good company. Start by checking your coverage, choosing a priority and making one appointment.
