Osteopathy vs. Chiropractic Care: What’s the Difference?

While both osteopathy and chiropractic care involve manual therapy, they focus on different aspects of the body:

Osteopathy

  • Gentle, manual techniques to support natural movement
  • Often focuses on fascia, joints, and fluid movement
  • Can be beneficial for chronic tension, posture, and stress

Chiropractic Care

  • Targets spinal alignment and nervous system function
  • Often includes adjustments or manipulations
  • Can also include supportive therapies

Both approaches can work independently or together, depending on your needs. Not sure which is right for you? Our team is happy to help you decide.

How Osteopathic Care Works

How Osteopathic Treatment Works

Osteopathy uses gentle, hands-on techniques to help your body move better, feel less tense, and function more comfortably.

Depending on your needs, treatment may involve:

  • Light pressure to release tight muscles and fascia
  • Guided movements to improve joint mobility
  • Subtle work around the head, spine, or abdomen
  • Gentle repositioning to ease stiffness and discomfort

Each session is tailored to your symptoms and how your body responds.

Quick Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Osteopathy regulated in Ontario and Canada?

No, osteopathy is not regulated in Canada. Currently, there is no government involvement at the provincial or national level in education or professional registration. This is why certain osteopathic schools like the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy strive to meet and exceed international standards.

How does Classical Osteopathy differ from Eclectic Osteopathy?

Where Classical Osteopathy encompasses an understanding of principles and can stand on its own, Eclectic Osteopathy is taught as a series of memorized techniques or manipulations for different parts of the body. Eclectic Osteopathy lacks founding principles and theory and is typically layered onto an existing modality like massage therapy or physiotherapy. These types of programs are prevalent in Europe and Canada. At the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy, students are instead trained thoroughly over four years in the science and art of Classical Osteopathy.

Can I see other health practitioners while I am being treated by an osteopath?

Yes! But make sure you spread your appointments out to allow the body to adjust to whatever treatment you have received. Try to book your appointments on opposing weeks!

What do i wear to my osteopathy appointment?

For purposes of patient and practitioner comfort, shorts, skorts, or pants are preferred during treatment rather than dresses and skirts. Please also advise that wearing socks or bringing a pair with you to treatment is preferred and appreciated for hygienic purposes.
